    Attention tennis enthusiasts! The Sobeys Indoor Sports Complex is providing indoor tennis times during the winter months. Four courts will be set up for drop-in play on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon and 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Affordable drop-in fees and a welcoming environment for all levels of players is another way Active Pictou County is making it easier to be active this winter.   • Kinsmen Add Learn to Sledge to Power Skating Program

    The New Glasgow Kinsmen have been "serving the community's greatest need" since 1943. The service club is well known in Pictou County for their baseball and power skating programs that have benefited thousands of children over the years.  Active Pictou County is excited to support the New Glasgow Kinsmen Club as they expand their power skating program to include learn to sledge. It is a learn-to-skate program using sleds and picks/sticks instead of regular skates. Throughout the program the participants will learn how to propel themselves, keep themselves upright and perform turns and stops.
  • Tumblebugs: Physical Literacy for Preschoolers

    Tumblebugs is an introductory program for basic movement and modified gymnastics that is fun, safe, inclusive and developmentally appropriate for 3 ½ to 5-year-old children in early childhood settings. The consistent and progressive activity plans include both active and quiet segments with directed and exploratory learning.   • Bikes Take Over Downtown New Glasgow on August 23

    cri·te·ri·um noun  a one-day bicycle race on a circuit road course. Pictou County Cycle adds to their race inventory with the addition of the Critz of Fury, taking place August 23 on the streets of downtown New Glasgow.  Criteriums are exciting races for both the athletes and spectators as the action is close-up and fast!   • Skating Equipment Loan Program Targets Schools

    Introducing children to the benefits of being active by making it possible for them to sample a variety of sports and activities is crucial in the development of physical literacy. Schools often plan outings for students, but access to the proper equipment becomes a barrier.  Thanks to the support of the Department of Health & Wellness, Active Pictou County has a Skating Equipment Kit available for elementary schools in Pictou County to borrow. The kit includes 15 helmets and 24 pairs of skates in a variety of sizes.
